Many things have been said about the "right" way to do this. I'd like to suggest that you turn off expiry on exiting groups ("(remove-hook 'gnus-summary-prepare-exit-hook 'gnus-summary-expire-articles)") and run expiry once a day, say when you go to lunch. kai -- Life is hard and then you die.
