I have a procmail-equivalent deliver mail to local spool files, and then the Gnus mail backend (nnml) moves this to a bunch of individual files. (That's the "mail moving bit" I was talking about.) Now, if that had been at fault, then my missing article might have been an example. But that's apparently not so, so presumably sendmail just decided not to deliver it for some reason, and the problem has nothing to do with Gnus.
