If HTML looks ugly, you perceive it as some kind of a bug, and `K b' is a way around that bug. We are still in the realm of debugging. If you could just inform Gnus that W3 rendering does not interest you, then Gnus could automatically use the alternative to select something you like more. Best would be to improve the HTML renderer, of course.
