It's extremely inconsistent.  Here is my summary buffer for ding, in
Oort as of this morning:

No `.' at all.  But I surely hadn't seen any of these articles before.

It seems like a nice feature, but I can't figure out what it's really
supposed to be telling me, if it doesn't show up when it obviously
ought to.
