Disaster has finally struck my .newsrc.eld. The upstream ISP where I
nntp netnews from converted the news server to Typhoon last night and
in the process has reset all the article numbers to 1. I've got
almost three years of history in mail groups so I can't start the
.newsrc over completely from scratch.

Is there any way I can preserve my ~/News/cache? The only obvious
thing I can think of is to visit each of the groups in the cache and
copy the messages to a mail-ish group.

Do I have any better way of resynching .newsrc other than editing all
nntp groups one by one with G E in the *Topics* buffer?

Oh well. At least Gnus withstood the changeover better than my
netnews -> nnml converter. Some time during the night *large* gaps
started appearing in the groups it was tracking and I arrived this
morning to find over 300,000 null messages spooled. Fun city. :-/

I'm of the opinion that any newsadmin lacking sufficient neurons to
rub together, so as to realize that he needs to copy the active file
from the old system to the new one, ought to be drawn-and-quartered at
dawn, hung at noon, and shot at dusk. Gimme time and I'll think of
something for midnight, too.

Probably not, but the one good thing is that you can probably do it
once to create a keyboard macro, if you're very careful, and the
pattern is sufficiently regular (as it surely ought to be).
