My *Messages* buffer contains many sequences like this:
nnml: Reading incoming mail from file...
Wrote /home/karl/Mail/list/ding/24422
Wrote /home/karl/Mail/personal/jprc/total-recall/738
nnml: Reading incoming mail (1 new)...done
1? Self-evidently, there were 2.
The number of new items in parentheses is always either 0 or 1.
