Except for the -generate-database interaction, what you describe is
what I consider normal.  When you move an article to another group, it
has (generally) already been read.  It is moved to the new group with
that status intact.  If you happen to `M-u' to remove all marks from
the article before moving, including it's "been read" status, it will
show up in the new group as unread, and should appear normally.

I generally consider the fact that articles are moved with all marks
intact to be a feature, though obviously it's slightly confusing until
one realizes what it is that has happened.
