I think you must be reading an old version of the manual. This is
from the new manual:
(gnus-add-configuration
'(article (vertical 1.0
(group 4)
(summary .25 point)
(article 1.0))))
Basically, to go from old to new, you just add "vertical 1.0"
everywhere. :-)
