No description of bug fixes, no announcement on the ding-list (only
ding-announce), no announcement or patches from the patch-list and
when I downloaded the file gnus.tar.gz it untarred to v5.6.42.

It's real.  There are two bug fixes in it and it untars into gnus-5.6.43.
Maybe you caught it while Lars was uploading it?

I kinda rewrote the pub scripts to work with pgnus, so I had to
send out the announcements manually.

Perhaps but I downloaded it just under an hour ago. I got it from the
URL in the message (<URL:http://www.gnus.org/gnus.tar.gz>), did you
get it from the same place?

I've now copied it over to www.gnus.org as well.
