I wanted to avoid using all old variables to provide an interface that
is as clean as possible. Being overly backwards compatible would
muddle the waters, I think.

I just tried it, and it seems to work...

Yup. I removed all those kinds of variables.

I definitely want to convert rmail, VM and mh-e to use message.el.
