Might it be an idea to put in some timing instrumentation in Gnus, so
that when someone whines "this and that is sooo slow...", Lars can
just calmly tell them to toggle on some timing variables, and use this
information to tell them that it is the NNTP-server that is the
culprit?

Well -- `elp' is useful.  `M-x elp-instrument-package RET gnus RET'
will start timing, and then `M-x elp-results' will give you the
results.
