In gnus 5.2.37 (and many earlier versions) I have occasionally joined and
entered new groups and realized after that I wanted the group to NOT be
adaptive.

So, I exit the group which produces an ADAPT file
(gnus-use-adaptive-scoring is 't). I then create a score file for the
group with (adapt ignore) as one of the elements. I then do 'W f'
(gnus-score-flush-cache) just to be safe and reenter the group.

Unfortunately, I find that the ADAPT file is still read, or (more likely)
that the ADAPT file is still in memory and is used even though I have told
the group to not use adaptive score. I have also found that even if I
delete the ADAPT file, the group still does not (ignore adapt) as it
creates a new ADAPT file the next time I exit the group. Also, other
changes I make by hand in the SCORE file don't seem to take effect the next
time I enter the group.

Should gnus-score-flush-cache also flush the ADAPT cache, or should there
be some way to clear this information for a given group?

The ADAPT files aren't cached, I believe. Gnus will use the ADAPT
files it finds -- switching off adaptivity just means that new ADAPT
files won't be created.

That sounds like a bug. I've never seen this. Does it happen all the
time or just sometimes?

I haven't seen this either. After a `W f', Gnus has to re-read the
actual score files, so changes should take effect immediately.
