Perhaps we should get a biiig list of fruits and vegetables? Does
anybody have one handy?

The finalists now seem to be Mango, Potato and Kiwi -- the last one
was very succintly and convincingly argued for: "Kiwi! Kiwi! Kiwi!".

I suppose "egg-plant gnus" is out of the question?

Do you have a copy of Nethack? IIRC it includes a huge list of fruits
and vegetables.

This one might be a good one, just because of the great hype of

I'm still trying to fix the alphabetic argument:

(ding) Gnus should of course have been Thing Gnus (with a nordic Thing)
except all Americans would have got the wrong "Thing".

and the one before that was Umeda Gnus, wasn't it.

So what except Quince starts with a Q ?

"Quark" is not exactly a fruit, and except to a German,
smells either of physics or James Joyce.

Edible Pea Pod Gnus. Nice. But I'm the one who has to write the
name, and my fingers doth protest. We do have abbrev mode though.

General Information: This fruit, prized by many, is difficult to find
in distribution. The flesh may be light pink to a deep salmon color
when fully ripe. The flavor has been described as a "sweet pumpkin
with ahnond flavors." Use in tropical shakes, daiquiris, or add to
fresh fruit salads.

It's an awesome name. Mamey Sapote Gnus. (Also spelled "Mammee

Uhh.. (global-set-key "\C-cg" 'gnus-insert-my-name) if you don't want
to turn on abbrev mode everywhere... You could always abbreviate it
EPPG... Yeah. Epp Gnus! Too bad its not 'eep', which would be

I don't think it would be wise to name a version of Gnus after a
fruit whose acronym is a synonym of the Evil Empire.

Yeah, careful with that one. If it were Edible Pea Pod Gnus, would
that make us Pod People? ;-)

What are the last two letters of "doesn't" and "can't"?
Coincidence? I think not.

:-) Nice, but it has to be a vegetable/fruit/tree/plant thing.

Is MSG the name of an Evil Empire? No -- it's the name of those
delicious chinese meals. :-)

Oh. MS.

Well...what about: Triffid Gnus (although they somewhat fictional):

Beware the triffids... they grow... know... walk... talk... stalk... and kill!

To summarise the film: (from http://uk.imdb.com/search.html)

Plot Summary for

Day of the Triffids, The (1962)

A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at
it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a
consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the
escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving
themselves around and attacking people.

Great film.

ooooh...

A friend uses the tagline "Say it with flowers -- send her a triffid" :-)

They die in salt water, though -- the ending is a "pied piper" style
scene where they follow an ice cream truck over a cliff into the ocean...
(That might affect your choice :-) I've been told, though, that the
book was different; in the book, society collapsed, and the triffids
basically won.
