So, like, I got a bit carried away as usual, and `xpm-mode' is now a
drawing program. :-) It still uses something XPMish as its internal
format. (I now have the XPM specs, so I can parse things a bit
better, I think.)

`xpm-mode' is a total misnomer now. What should a drawing program
running under XEmacs be called? XPain(t)? Pamacs? PhotoMax?
MacDraw? Emaw?

(Not that this has anything to do with Gnus, though. Perhaps I should
mosey on over to xemacs-beta instead...)

(I don't know if it's any good. It's quite Emacsy, and that's kinda
unusual for a drawing program.)

How about...*drum-roll*...pixmacs

(Hmmm...I think we need an audio equivalent to smiley.el; standard
earcons would be: drum roll, snicker, laugh, etc. :-)

I've found a snicker, laugh, and some other related sound effects,
including an **Evil Laugh** suitable for announcement of new features
:-), but no drum roll, and there's got to be a drum roll ...

It should be really simple to implement, just add a new entry to
`gnus-button-alist' for each sound effect, and write a function to
play the sound. By default it could just cat a file into /dev/audio.

Then, **Evil Laugh** would become a button that would play the sound
when pushed.

Anyone have a good list of earcons?

I think the main problem is not finding the sounds, but in determining
the most-used ways of specifying sounds in text. *sigh*,*groan*, etc.
Anybody remember the old VMS game Monster? It had a lot of 'atmosphere'
commands that could be a good starting point. I've got the source around
somewhere, have to see if I can dig them up.

Nah... no interaction from the user should be required. :) How about
hooking into the redisplay hooks like lazy-lock does? When a region is
exposed via window-resizing or scrolling, etc, and new earcons are exposed,
it plays the sound.

Well, the problem with that is that these sounds should *enhance* the
message, not *detract* from it. If your screen is 50 lines high, and
down on the last line there's a `*giggle*', then you want to hear
girlish laughter when you read the last line, not when the
gnus-annoy-my-coworkers routine first displays it.

We don't exactly have a message-eye-contact-made-hook available,
unless Per has tied something in with telepathic-survey-mode :-).

We need a toggling enable/disable for the whole mode, and perhaps also
a switch between immediately playing the sound when the message is
displayed versus making a button out of it.

Definitely. I'd prefer having the sound played when I clicked it.

Ack! no, please make it generic so that it can be used with VM, W3, etc.
And if it is generic, then it should not be gnus-sound...
