You don't really need that. `gnus-group-group-name' always returns the current group name. Anyways, with Sudish's patch(eses) and some additional tinkering, everything seems to work as one would expect -- prompting with the current group name as the default. Which will pop you into a *mail* buffer when posting to a mail group, etc. -- Home is where the cat is.
