I *think* it was caused by a corrupted .newsrc.eld file. Since I had to change my NNTPSERVER anyways, I took the chore of starting with a fresh .newsrc.eld It now seems to work OK (but since I erronously reported that once, alreay I'll wait a bit before saying so ;-).
