Interestingly this unusual url is not highlighted correctly in the
article buffer.  

But according to my reading of rfc2396 (see 2.4.3. Excluded US-ASCII
Characters) it's not legal to have brackets (`[' and `]') in an url.
So we can't really fault gnus here.

Quite.

Note that the proper persistent URL to the article in Deja News would
be the much simpler
        http://www.deja.com/=dnc/getdoc.xp?AN=509406109
