Hm... Perhaps I should have read RFC1522 before starting. Nah.

I think, by golly, that the RFC1522 encoding now works under the
MULEs.

Get it from <URL:http://www.gnus.org/pgnus.tar.gz> or
"/ftp@ftp.gnus.org:/pub/emacs/gnus/". The patch is available as
<URL:http://www.gnus.org/patches/pgnus-0.8-0.9.diff.gz>.

ChangeLog since last release:

Sun Aug 30 17:46:01 1998 Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen <larsi@menja.ifi.uio.no>

	* gnus.el: Pterodactyl Gnus v0.9 is released.

1998-08-30 16:13:08 Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen <larsi@gnus.org>

	* base64.el (base64-encode-region): Don't add newline.

	* rfc1522.el (rfc1522-narrow-to-field): Copied here.

	* mm-util.el: New file.

	* mm-decode.el: Somewhat depleted.
	* mm-encode.el: Ditto.

	* rfc1522.el: New file.

Here, at least (which isn't necessarily saying anything, because
anything could be wrong with my setup) it didn't. In pgnus I got
Hrvoje.Nik¹iæ. (In xconsole, OTOH, I got Hrvoje.Nik9if).

They don't. I get:

(4) (font/warning) Unable to instantiate font for face gnus-header-from-face, charset latin-iso8859-2

What does that mean?

RFC-1521/1522 has been obsoleted by RFC2045-RFC2049. There
is an appendix in RFC2049 that describes the differences
between the two sets.

Perhaps, but from what I can see in the appendix of RFC2049, the
changes in the area covered by RFC1522 are slight, indeed. In fact,
the appendix gives the impression that they've mostly fixed typos,
added examples and tightened the BNF.

Do anyone sell _The Collected RFCs_ in book form? I like reading
things on paper, and I don't have a sooper-speedy printer.

I suspect that such a book would be big enough to stun several oxen,
though.

AFAIK it means you don't have an iso-8859-2 font installed in X. It doesn't
seem to matter, though, because I do have one; it just doesn't seem to
be getting used. Did Steve Baur step out for breakfast? He usually
groks this stuff ...

That you don't have iso-8859-2 fonts?

Do you see tildes, or do you see latin1 chars, as Michael does?

Am I the only person the RFC2047 de/encoding works for? This message
has an X-Header-With-Japanese-Text header up there. Does it look OK
under MULE-enabled Emacsen, or is it totally garbled?

Hmm. The only iso-8859-2 fonts that I have seem to be produced by
xfsft (a TrueType font server), from the Microsoft provided fonts.

The catch is that for these particular fonts (in their core set), you
need to use one of their operating systems, since they've chosen to
package them up in an executable that's not a self-extracting zip
file. But having done that, you can just copy the fonts across and
things work properly. Doubtless there are other sources.

No idea. I have them on my font server, but not many. I usually
choose the font that has an -8859-2 version. For example, you can try
this in your .Xdefaults:

XEmacs.default.attributeFont: -*--medium-r-medium-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-*
XEmacs.italic.attributeFont: -*--medium-i-medium-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-*
XEmacs.bold.attributeFont: -*--medium-b-medium-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-*

> > Do you see tildes, or do you see latin1 chars, as Michael does?

> I see tildes.

Then, with the warning you get, the Gnus code is probably correct.
Michael is getting the iso-8859-1 characters, which means something is
wrong in Lisp, for him.

The best thing to do is install the full set of Mule fonts.

	 ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/intlfonts.tar

You will need to inform the X server about the new font directories
with `xset fp+ <directory>' the first time. For the long-term it's
best to enter all the directories in your XF86Config or whatever it is

I don't know. How strange. I don't see any iso-8859-2 in my XFree
3.3.2 source tree, but I do see plenty of Kanji fonts.

Less garbled than only partially decoded. It looks like it's trying to
be iso-2022-jp ...

I never knew such a thing existed; but now, having looked the full
archive is intlfonts-1.1.tar.gz. There are also split pieces
available.

That's what it's supposed to be, but it isn't being encoded/decoded?
into Japanese letters. The raw escape codes showing through look like
ISO-2022.

Hm. What the code does is basically calling `decode-coding-string'
with the charset and the decoded string, and inserting what is
returned. Like so:

(defun rfc2047-decode (charset encoding string)
"Decode STRING as an encoded text.
Valid ENCODINGs are \"B\" and \"Q\".
If your Emacs implementation can't decode CHARSET, it returns nil."
  (let ((cs (mm-charset-to-coding-system charset)))
    (when cs
      (mm-decode-coding-string
       (cond
	((equal "B" encoding)
	 (base64-decode string))
	((equal "Q" encoding)
	 (quoted-printable-decode-string
	  (mm-replace-chars-in-string string ?_ ? )))
(t (error "Invalid encoding: %s" encoding)))
       cs))))

Uh. If you use the `W M w' command, that is. It turned out that I
had that function in my gnus-article-display-hook. Oops.

I've now added that to the default gnus-article-display-hook, though.

Sorry about this neophyt question:

If I redirect my display, on which machine should I add the new fonts: the one emacs is
running or the one emacs is displayed?

Thank you,

Assuming "add" == untar the font tarballs.

Do it on the machine the X server is running on (unless you're using
a font server in which case they should be untarred on the machine
the font server is running) or in directories that are NFS (or the
equivalent) mounted on the machine the X server is running on.

The font directories need to be visible to the X server somehow,
regardless of how the display is redirected.

Hmm. For 0.11? With 0.10, I still have to type 'W M w' to get the
japanese letters. Then it works perfectly though.

That's because I screwed up. I meant to write:

~From: MIME-JUNK <hniksic@srce.hr>

...only I forgot the `<hniksic@srce.hr>' part, so sendmail decided to
play doctor and fill it in for me.

The important part is that you can *see* the latter correctly!

Utter f*king bogosity! The infamous \202 strikes again! Your
messsage is totally bogus. It contains no content-type, which means
it should default to something like text/plain with us-ascii or
iso-8859-1 charset. It also means that `\202š' and `\202ć' mean
*nothing*!

It's just temporary code to make you test Pterodactyl MULE.

For a possibly unrelated data point: I see the japanese characters in

Yep, very nice. Now all I need to do is make TrueType fonts work for
it so it doesn't pick a different font for the non-english characters,
right in the middle of a word - I've been using xfstt which does only
one encoding type at a time :(

I tried xfsft yesterday, but the font sizes were all screwed up and it
didn't seem to scale fonts at all in netscape (everything was the same
size...)

(Tahoma makes a nice default font in XEmacs, I've found...)

I'm happy with the GNU intlfonts package. Some no-frills fonts, but
beautiful in their simplicity.

Sure, they work ok, but it's aesthetically displeasing to have
font-changes in the middle of a word like so :

I notice on slashdot.org that there's a third TrueType font server
now...

I'll just have to try and make xfsft work for me some time, I guess.
Unless Mr xfstt can make it serve multiple encodings at once...

As uaual, I spoke too soon - it turns out I can do (for example) :

xfstt --encoding iso8859-1,iso8859-2

(I thought I could only list one encoding type there)

...and it all works groovily.

Yay !

With 0.13 the japanese characters are gone again. Instead I get
[**iso-2022-jp charset **] 日本語

Even after a `W M c' or a `M-t'? Japanese glyphs were displayed for

I've added gnus-article-decode-charset to my
gnus-article-display-hook, which works great, and I'm using the
"fixed" font, which is a rather small, very pleasing sans-serif.

The Japanese characters below display as 3 empty boxes when I'm in the
fixed font. When I switch to the atrociously ugly standard fontset via
the menu item "Mule->Set Font/Fontset->Fontset->standard: 16-dot
medium", I can see the 3 J characters in their full glory.

Is it possible to see the J characters while using the "fixed" font?

I'm using:

- GNU Emacs 20.3.1 (i586-unicent-linux-gnu, X toolkit) of Thu Aug 20
  1998 on banshee
- Pterodactyl Gnus v0.11

Thanks -

Bill

`gnus-article-decode-charset' is in that hook by default.

> Is it possible to see the J characters while using the "fixed" font?

Uhm. I think so. I have this in my .Xdefaults file:

*font: -b&h-lucidatypewriter-medium-r-normal-sans-14-140-75-75-m-90-iso8859-1

And that's all the font-twiddling I've done. (This is on a Red Hat
GNU Linux system.) And the Japanese glyphs -- 日本語 -- show up all
pretty and stuff.

I guess it's all just a matter of having installed the proper fonts on
the X server.
