Oh, blast.  Yes, my Info-directory-list did manage to hold one
directory with an ancient(!) manual.  Apologies for short-sightedness.

I'm now using...

	   (gnus-add-configuration
	    '(article
	      (horizontal 1.0
			  (vertical 0.5
				    (group 0.25)
				    (summary 1.0 point))
			  (vertical 1.0
				    (article 1.0)))))

...which does precisely what the old version did.
