OK first off, I get prompted for a password when I collect mail, even
though nnmail-pop-password is set. I have confirmed this with C-h v.
It worked fine in Gnus 5.4.65. This is only a minor irritation, but
it slows the startup somewhat (its a windows machine, so it needs to
be rebooted 4 times a day, unlike the XEmacs session running on my
linux box at home which has been up for weeks, months?).
Secondly, I think this is broken (I snipped it out of Lars' .gnus)
Specifically, the nnheader-temp-write.
(defun xface-insert ()
(nnheader-temp-write nil
(insert-file-contents "~/.xface")
(buffer-string)))
(require 'message)
(setq message-required-news-headers
(nconc message-required-news-headers
(list '(X-Face . xface-insert))))
(setq message-required-mail-headers
(nconc message-required-mail-headers
(list '(X-Face . xface-insert))))
This is why I think this ( I have not wrapped it deliberately) I hope
I haven't annoyed anyone ...
Signaling: (void-function nnheader-temp-write)
(nnheader-temp-write nil (insert-file-contents "~/.xface") (buffer-string))
xface-insert()
message-generate-headers(((X-Yow . yow) (X-Mayan-Date . mayan-date) From Date (optional . In-Reply-To) Message-ID (optional . User-Agent) (X-Face . xface-insert)))
message-setup(((Subject . "Re: hello") (Cc . "shaun@gasops.co.uk") (To . "robert.hebden@gasops.co.uk (Dr Robert M. Hebden)") (References . "<wkogieeo1e.fsf@mail.gasops.co.uk>")) #<buffer *gnus article copy*>)
message-reply(nil t)
message-wide-reply(nil)
gnus-post-news(nil "nnml:gmsl" [1 "hello" "robert.hebden@gasops.co.uk (Dr Robert M. Hebden)" "17 Jun 1999 17:26:37 +0000" "<wkogieeo1e.fsf@mail.gasops.co.uk>" "" 121 39 "Xref: HALCYON gmsl:1" nil] "*Article*" (1) nil nil)

call-interactively(gnus-summary-followup-with-original)
gnus-article-read-summary-keys(nil)

if the xface insert function is breaking it, is there an alternative?
Thank you
Shaun

I forgot to say, that the x-face insert worked in 5.6.45. It has
something to do with nnheader-temp-write I think.
Thanks
appologies for following up with the new info.

This is because mail retrieval has undergone total revision in Pterodactyl.
nnmail-pop-password is ignored (I think) as mail-sources allows for
multiple POP drops with different logins and passwords.

Thanks.
Do you know why the nnheader-temp-write, is void? (Question No2) Is
there a way (yet) to insert file contents into arbitrary headers?
Once I get this sorted, I'll be fully pgnus, instead of using it just
for MIME.
Thanks for your help.

Does this work?
(defun my-message-header-hook ()
(save-excursion
(goto-char (point-min))
(insert-file-contents "/tmp/foo")))
(add-hook 'message-header-hook 'my-message-header-hook)

The above ought to work for many different Gnusae, I can't see why it
would be different for Gnus 5.6 versus pgnus, say.

I added some stuff and got it working nicely:
(defvar xfile (expand-file-name "~/.xface"))
(defun insert-xfile ()
(save-excursion
(goto-char (point-min))
(search-forward mail-header-separator)
(beginning-of-line nil)
(insert "X-Face: ")
(insert-file xfile)))
(add-hook 'message-send-hook 'insert-xfile)
Thanks for your help Kai :))
