I don't know if I didn't search the thread hard enough, but if I set my primary select method back to nntp (or something not nnml), then things seem to work again. I will have to report on this in a few days. I had turned off nntp because the corporate newsserver has died with no sign of it ever coming back to life. This may be related to the comment that Kai (I think) had about attempting to create two nnml servers.
