I just tried the same thing, and apart from having to add
mc-install-write-mode to message-mode-hook (which has no docstring, by
the way, and doesn't appear as a completion with C-h v) it worked
fine. Which version of mailcrypt are you using? Is your
mail-header-separator "--text follows this line--"?
