Yes, I do both on Linux 2.4 and NetBSD-4 with courier-imap 3.0.8 using
GNU Emacs 22.0.97.1 and ngnus 0.6.
I do exactly the same "procedure" except I'm not running any other
imap client paralell (like thunderbird or new mail notify stuff).
Usually I have to exit from gnus and restart it to recognize the new mails.
