Seems to be some problems with the Linux > telnet. Hey, that did the trick for me, too--thanks a lot for your efforts! My intermediate host is also running Linux, so it very much seems that the Linux telnet is the problem. It might be a new "feature"--back then when it worked via this machine it was still running an older version of Linux.
