Many ISP's give the user one password for both FTP and NNTP. In both cases, problems can surface when using .netrc for both FTP and NNTP. If you use seperate files, these potential risks/problems go away. An additional 1KB dot file isn't going to burn anyones disk quota, and mentioning the file permissions issue in the manual is enough to handle the protection issue.
