Hello,
I encountered the following bug when starting to use Xemacs 20.0
When start my gnus I get the following message:

nnml: Reading incoming mail...
Getting mail from /m/ns2/var/spool/mail/mulperi...
Doing chmod: no such file or directory, /m/ns2/home/mulperi/.gnus-crash-box

I have recompiled my gnus and its version is 5.4.11.

 - Ville

You didn't mention what OS/machine which is important when
talking about XEmacs 20.0. Especially since similar problems have been
reported (and fixed) on the alpha, I think. If you have problems with
gnus in XEmacs 20.0, it's probably better to report them to the
xemacs-beta@xemacs.org mailing list, than to the ding-list. Or at least
both, unless you are positive it's a gnus bug not an xemacs problem.

What is the value of nnmail-spool-file?

It's "/var/spool/mail/mulperi". Funny thing is that if I have
started gnus with XEmacs 19.14 and then start it with XEmacs 20.0
the group buffer appears as usual. But if I first start the 20's gnus
the error will appear.

This reminds me of a situation where movemail wouldn't work because it
wasn't allowed to create a lock file in the mail spool directory, but
Gnus didn't notice the failure and assumed that the .gnus-crashbox had
been created.

I solved with by making movemail setgid mail. You'll have to decide for
yourself if movemail is secure enough for that.

It would be easy to argue that it is not, since there is no security or
authentication involved in movemail. It would be trivial for someone to
use this to overwrite other files writable by group mail.

What I prefer to do is to make the mail spool directory mode 777 and +t,
which allows anyone to write there but not delete any files they do not
own, similar to /tmp. The sysmonster needs to keep an eye on it,
though, to prevent people from using it as /tmp... or a script that
deletes any file with a name that is not equal to the file's owner.
