Wow! I had completely forgotten the anniversary.

Thanks!

(Apropos of absolutely nothing -- I've just written ~3500 lines of Tcl
code. And I enjoyed it! Someone please shoot me before I start
writing, uh, Java or something. Or C++! Eek!)

Or perl even ;-)

and I have already started on the Gnus rewrite in Perl. Do you think
Lars would enjoy completing it? I think there are only ~35000 lines
missing :-)

$ perl -MGnus::Newsrc -le 'print Gnus::Newsrc->new->alist_hash->{"nnml:gnus"}[2]{expire}'

I think we should keep *both* versions (plus Lars' new ones in Java
and Tcl), and just make sure they are in sync.

The should all read the appropriate ~/.newsrc.{eld,tcld,pld,javad},
which ever one has been modified the latest.

Absolutely. That might be a bit too much work, though. Perhaps a couple of
languages could be dropped in favour of a version for POSIX-compliant shells?
There are few UNIX machines without some Bourne shell, and it would be very
useful to have a fully programmable threading newsreader available as soon as
you have a working /bin/sh.

True... That and a dos .bat file set should cover just about everything!
It would take way too long to get a elisp version up and running,
having to set emacs up and all... We should limit it to just those two.

I think that instead of spending effort on porting Gnus itself to
those languages/environments, one should focus on writing a few
simple, generic, all-purpose tools. Like

  elisp2tcl
  elisp2perl
  elisp2bin-sh
  elisp2msdos-batch

etc.

I believe such a tool should be written in COBOL, for the sake of
completeness.

Actually, I think we should start refering to Gnus as its own
language. It really has become a super-set of elisp.

Gnus: A newsreader written in the Gnus language.

(talk about the chicken and egg problem)
