Well, the deal is that I'm not setting anything specific in my .gnus
file that should be changing the encoding, so I suspected that
something was actually broken with gnus.  Try forwarding yourself
something and I bet it won't work (looks fine in the outgoing
composition...  It's not till its un'mml'ified that it seems to get
8bit encoded.
