When entering an nntp group, my name looks like "Gro\337johann" in
ancient articles, but fine in new and cached ones. I think this has
been this way for some time now.

Does anybody else see this, as well?

I saw something like "Gro\_johann".

Is this on an Agentized nntp group? Perhaps the agent .overview needs
to be regenerated? Best I can think of.

Unfortunately, yes. It happens with the nnspool backend as well.

I noticed this: when I select a group with C-u RET RET (all articles),
_all_ authors and subjects are OK, but selecting a group "normally"
results _sometimes_ in the \nnn garbage (but _never_ in new articles).

The funny thing is that it doesn't happen always, and in the same
summary buffer some names or subjects are OK (cached?) and others are
not.

This sounds like it could be cache-related. Can you see whether there
really is a pattern here -- that those articles that come directly
from nnspool are wonky, and those from the cache are ok?

Hm. So this is the result of gnus-fetch-old-headers fetching? Interesting.

Messages from the cache are okay. New messages (directly from nntp)
are okay. Ancient messages are okay if I fetch all messages (C-u RET
RET). Ancient messages are broken if I don't fetch all messages.

Do you just use old-header fetching, or do you use sparse articles as
well?

gnus-build-sparse-threads is nil, if that's what you mean.

Ok...

I've looked over the code, and I can't really find any special
handling of strings that would make iso-8859-1 chars be output as \xxx
in the summary buffer when gnus-fetch-old-headers is set. And I've
done some light testing without being able to reproduce this. Hm.
Haven't tried with Emacs 20.4, though...

Does anybody else see this?

I think Norbert Koch said that he's also seeing this. But I'm not
sure, maybe he was observing another problem.

Norbert, do you see my name as "Großjohann" in new and cached articles
but as "Gro\337johann" ancient ones? (In newsgroups only.)

I'm now running Emacs 20.4. You're running the Emacs 20.5 pretest,
right? Could you check whether you can reproduce this bug with 20.4
as well?

This is now fixed in CVS.
