The gnu.emacs.gnus group is almost certainly the right place for
beginner Gnus help.  The ding list is almost certainly the right place
for issues with CVS or alpha gnus releases and proposing code changes
with patches.

Common practice on most of the lists I read is to expect everyone
posting to the list to also be subscribed to it, such that a Cc to the
original sender generates a duplicate copy of the mail and so is
vaguely rude.  (The Debian lists, in particular, tend to have people
complaining more loudly about it.)  If you don't want to get ding in
email, you could also read it via nntp through gmane.

AFAICT everyone on the ding list knows of gnu.emacs.gnus, and people
actively interested in helping people as opposed to just writing code
do try to help out there.
