OK what am I doing wrong?
I've installed a later version of gnus as
ding chooses to use the gnus, gnus-1 naming scheme

This is Info, the online documentation browsing system.
This page (the Directory node) gives a menu of major topics.
button1 or button2 on a highlighted word follows that cross-reference.
button3 anywhere brings up a menu of commands.
? lists additional keyboard commands.
h invokes the Info tutorial.

Info-directory-list is
Info-directory-list's value is ("/usr/local/lib/xemacs-19.14/info/" "/usr/local/info")
However, when I try to traverse the SGNUS node it loads the gnus node from
the xemacs info directory not my site-local directory.
I believe if it founds the node definition for my info that any nodes are
then relative from my localdir _not_ dir
What am I missing?

Use Info-default-directory-list, not Info-directory-list. The latter
gets set internally. It's in the documentation somewhere.
Info-directory-list
-- a variable declared in Lisp.
Documentation:
List of directories to search for Info documentation files.
Default is to use the environment variable INFOPATH if it exists,
else to use Info-default-directory-list.
Info-default-directory-list

This value is used as the default for `Info-directory-list'. It is set
