Fairly straightforward instructions (and it's now an official debian service): http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ The backports dovecot currently has upstream version 1.2.13 as well. As I understand it, unless backports has a security update currently in unstable, the backport packages will be automatically upgraded when stable rolls over from lenny to squeeze.
