It seems to be working.  I'm responding from gnus master HEAD right now,
built with, and running in, emacs 22.3 on CentOS5.

I now have an .authinfo.gpg file.

One thing that may be coincidental: I lost a lot of gnus-sync read marks
in this group when starting the new version.

Could it be that the .authinfo prompting messed up the
tramp-contacting-my-sync-server?  I killed the first emacs process
without saving anything and started gnus in a fresh emacs, without
reading any auto save files.  And this time it clearly used tramp to get
the sync stuff.  But the read information in this group was still lost
(247 unread instead of 11).
