Hi,
I have two (!) mails in my inbox. Yet, any time I enter the group gnus asks me
how mane mails I want to read (206?). This sucks.
I have deleted and re-created my inbox. I moved all mail from my inbox to my
inbox (to make MAX-MIN=2). I have nnml-generate-nov-databases'ed several
times. Nothing worked. Any idea?
Thanks,
Stefan.

I someone wanted to create a housekeeping function to compress down
the range of numbers in nnml groups, would it simply be a case of
renumbering the files and hacking the active file? Is the change
always local to a folder?
If so, I might have a go.
Be afraid. Be very afraid...

If you move the articles to the same group they are in, you'll
effectively get a collapsing of the empty spaces.

Apparently not. I did this with my inbox a number of times. Yet, gnus still
thinks that there are more than 200 mails in the group. Well, there are two
files in the directory.

I tried this once. It thanked me by marking all of the moved articles
as read.

How long ago? I haven't seen that problem in ages. I'm pretty sure
it was fixed some time in the Quassia cycle. I compress my mailing
list folders (I abuse the tick and dormant marks) regularly with this
method and all my marks are preserved and no new ones added.

Now, upon entering the group, gnus ask me, how many [333] mails I want to
read?. This number is clearly wrong. So I enter the group, mark all 7 of them,
and `B m' them to the same group. I leave the group, and re-enter. Guess what?
gnus now asks me for 340 mails?
What can I do?
cu
Stefan.

Check the nnml active file. I just had this happen to me when I tried
to copy an nnml group from one system to another (I just tarred up the
directory). I did an F to find the new group, but although it only
had about 20 messages in it I was told there were 340 messages there
(340 was the highest numbered article), and like you experienced,
entering the group and reading the messages did not solve that, nor
did packing the group with B-m. However, running
(nnml-generate-active-info "/home/dsg/.Mail/linux") in the scratch
buffer fixed it for me.

Gaak you're right. I was trying so many things I misremembered which
one worked. I'm pretty sure (of course I was "pretty sure before
too") what fixed it was:
(nnmail-save-active nnml-group-alist "/home/dsg/.Mail/active")
You might want to use a different active file in the above and compare
the difference to be safe.
