I don't know if lighter colors matter much.  There are some good hints
on how to conserve battery power here:

It is linux oriented but has some tips that could help other unices,
based on this info, I found hacked versions of bdflush and apmd to
help conserve power, and increase the functionality of the advanced
power management.  It's great to be able to just close the lid on the
laptop in the middle of your work, and open it later and continue from 
where your were.
