Is there something standard (I mean I could always rely on) about how
to recognize mailing lists postings? For instance, many lists I'm subscribed
to add an X-Mailing-List: header, but not all of them.

	Thanks

I think there is no standard way. Often, there is an X-Mailing-List
header, often, the Sender starts with "owner-". Sometimes, there is
an X-Loop header. I hope you catch all three with this.

I originally thought you could recognize a mailing list posting by you
not being in To and Cc, but that fails for Bcc'd mails.

My nnmail-split-methods includes this generic catch-all entry, which
follows a dozen other list-specific entries.

    ("list.general" ;	Other lists.
     "\\(From\\|Return-Path\\):.*\\([Mm]ajor[Dd]omo?@\\|@onelist\\|listserv@\\|listproc@\\|owner-\\|-request\\)")

It has proven quite reliable for me.

There is an effort to standardize a header giving a unique ID to a mailing
list that does not change when the list moves around or is migrated to
different software. This proposed standard (which is at last call, meaning
that it is very close to being an RFC) is available at
http://www.within.com/~chandhok/ietf/listid.shtml.

Of course, you can't rely on this because nobody uses it yet. I tend to
filter on the envelope sender, which has the effect of putting personal CCs
into my inbox but the list copy in the folder for that list. This is what
I prefer (since it precisely mirrors what happens when someone sends a
courtesy CC to a newsgroup posting), but may not be what you want. I also
use Procmail; I don't know how you can filter on the envelope sender within
Gnus.

Depending on your MTA, you may be able to filter on Return-Path. I don't
know if it's possible to filter on X-From-Line, or if that conversion
happens too late (I suspect the latter).
