Isn't it an XEmacs issue? I'm not quite sure of it since I rarely see such characters, though. But, in fact, XEmacs 21.4.17 encodes it properly in my system as follows: (rfc2047-encode-string "Przej=C5=9Bci=C3=B3wka") =3D> "=3D?iso-8859-2?Q?Przej=3DB6ci=3DF3wka?=3D" (load "un-define") (rfc2047-encode-string "Przej=C5=9Bci=C3=B3wka") =3D> "=3D?utf-8?B?UHJ6ZWrFm2Npw7N3a2E=3D?=3D"
