It shouldn't change them.
When I'm redoing and consolidating the makefile, I'm going to add a
static target (or targets), to make my life easier and to make it easier for people
to build their own statics.
Right now I have this very brittle procedure for making statics, which
involves some minor patching to the cmake build files.  It broke on the
last release and I haven't fixed it.
