I "solved" this prior to seeing your suggestions. It appears xemacs
was installed with "with-mule=no". I reinstalled xemacs "env
FLAVOR="mule" make install clean" under the bsd ports system and howm
mode now installs "nicely".
I do get a lot of weird line break problems however... I believe this
is xemacs config stuff though not howm
