Hi. Thanks for your introduction of howm and CategoryHowm page
in EmacsWiki :-)

Below is a brief summary of
  http://howm.sourceforge.jp/cgi-bin/hiki/hiki.cgi?howmoney.0

To record expenses, write as follows.
  $food$ mabo donburi 500

M-x howmoney-daily to sum today's expenses.
Search "$food$" and M-x howmoney-daily to sum today's food expenses.
M-x howmoney-weekly and M-x howmoney-monthly work in the same way.

Type @ for detailed display.
Type p to change the period of sum.

You can also record time consumption like
03:09-10:10 @sleep@ telephone until late night
and use M-x howminutes-daily, M-x howminutes-weekly,
or M-x howminutes-monthly.

howmoney.el is here.

==========================================

I also show my simple solution with yen.el.
  http://howm.sourceforge.jp/a/yen.el

Record expenses in the following form.
[expenses] [2008-10-28] 10000yen USB flash memory

Search "[expenses]". Sort and filter found items if needed.

M-x yen-region in *howmS* buffer to sum all "***yen"
in the current region.
