This used to be a dream but now it's already possible on Linux. There are now some Linux distros that are built entirely using the LLVM Toolchain. Only the LLVM Toolchain, no GCC or GNU Binutils.
I know illumos is a GNU shop and the answer is most likely to be no. But please take the effort of Linux people for inspiration. Using the LLVM Toolchain will result in better code diagnostic and also better performance compared to GNU. The GNU linker sucks. Switching to LLVM linker on Windows gives a big performance boost in my experience.
p/s: does the Mold linker support illumos yet?
