[discuss] [Tribblix] What is the current state of UFS on illumos?

Tribblix is the only illumos still supports installing into UFS. But from what I know from my small research via Google, the state of UFS on illumos is not good. It's not even prepped for Y2038 problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

state of ufs is ‘as is’. it does work, it is not developed any further unless someone will step up to do so. Just the same as with any other component in the OS. Things do not get magically done.

Can you confirm that illumos UFS is not prepped for Y2038 problem is correct?

Yes, that is correct. The Y2038 fix means change in on disk format (besides in-memory changes). Also we do not support sector sizes other than 512B. Those changes basically mean major version change and that is considerable amount of work to be done. Which we do not need to do because we already have zfs which does not have those limits.

I think support might be overstating it. There's an installer, it's been
known to produce
working systems. You lose a lot of capabilities along the way - no boot
environments,
upgrades, or zones.

And no, our ufs won't survive Y2038. And it cannot be fixed. There's not
really a lot of
reason to fix it, although we will at some point need to transition to an
alternative
mechanism to create the live ISO images.

Oh, I didn't know that (or just I didn't remember), thank you Peter!
I had to use UFS on my Blade 100 because it had just 640M of RAM, now it has 1.5G and I can try installing on ZFS.
