I installed the latest OpenIndiana 24.04 and followed Till Wegmüller's instruction to update to the latest packages:
https://openindiana.org/pipermail/openindiana-discuss/2024-June/026890.html
Everything went smoothly until I rebooted the system to boot into the new BE. I quickly realized that the network applet was lost and I have no network connection. If I boot into the previous BE then I have network connection as usual.

Could you please be more specific what is the latest BE and what is the previous
one? Namely these:
1) output from `pkg list osnet-incorporation`
2) either output from `uname -v` or contents of the /etc/motd file.
from both the latest working and current non-working BE.
Thanks.

I'm currently on Windows. I'm afraid that I can't give you any information. On the previous BE, I have network connection but I can't use Firefox. It will always crash and give a big core dump file in my home directory. On the updated BE, I have Firefox working but I don't have the network connection.
The previous BE should be identical to what you get from a fresh installation.

I have the impression that there is very little testing. You only release a new release occasionally to show that the project is still alive. Whether the release is working is another story. I wrote here to inform you that there is a problem. Hopefully you can resolve it in the next round of updates. I will go back to Windows and wait. This is how we do things in Windows and I have gotten used to it.

Just to note that this is now 3 times in the last few days that I've seen
someone
report the exact same problem - via Twitter, IRC, and the mailing list. No
network with
the latest OI update, at least 2 of them are e1000g, one was in VirtualBox.

No worries, it is not working in Virtualbox VM's either after today's latest pkg update .. e1000g0 registered/unregistered nwamd_door_req_state: ncu interface:e1000g0 not found .. So the basic question is: has the device not been recognised by the driver,
or is it some
higher level in the stack (like nwam) that's gone wrong? (The fact that the
interface
name appears in the error messages seems to indicate that the device
exists.)
I'm not exactly sure how to identify this. But:
Does anything appear in /dev/net?
Can 'dladm show-phys' see it?
Does 'prtconf -D | grep e1000' show it?
The thing is, the last update to the driver was over 4 months ago, so a
broken
driver seems unlikely.

You can help test without booting away from Windows by installing
OI as a VirtualBox guest:
<URL:https://www.virtualbox.org/>
The latest OI update worked fine for me, but I don't use NWAM.

Hi Peter,
I'm investigating a regression that I likely introduced with "14237 Want
support for pthread_cond_clockwait() and friends" which has put nwam in
a bad spot and likely is responsible for this. I think I've root caused
this and am building a fix to prove out. My suspicion is that these
systems are all using nwam by default in which case it's likely not
progressing in getting networking up. Sorry for the trouble.

that's not true at all. openindiana is a rolling release i.e. worked on continuously. what gets
released as iso images every couple of months more or less is a snapshot of the current state at
that time. just update your installation after a few weeks to see how much has changed in between.
slamming something you know nothing about usually backfires.

We actually have the problem with new releases — you install your system once and then just run ‘pkg update; reboot’ and you will not need the iso unless you install new system (unless you clone it from existing one) or if you are developer and want to test the iso… or if you want to troll about not getting your monthly iso images… ;)

Success, can confirm that https://www.illumos.org/issues/16683 works again as before. Network is back and keep in mind .. test before release .. as nwam is default for most of the new users. Think about it .. maybe a stable/unstable (for testing) approach would help improve the quality .. as libdrm/Mesa is f*cked up as well and surely would be great to have been tested for those NOT using Intel drivers (software renderers of Mesa).
