[discuss] Updating OI cloud images

Hi folks,


the OI cloud image seems to be quite old. And I already had some trouble
updating it (eg. sshd needed special config tweaks to come up again).
After update, the system seems pretty crowded with many duplicate
packages (in different versions -> eg. perl stuff).

For those who just wanna quickly fire up an VM (eg. like in my case
running build jobs), that's pretty unpleasant.

Any chance that image gets rebuilt more frequently ?

What does it take to build it ? (could it be cross compiled, eg. on Linux ?)

Another problem I'm facing in my CI build VM case: I need to be able
to directly ssh into it, w/o prior manual intervention (eg. network
setup, allow pw-less root logins, ...). Any chance we could have
"official" prebuilt images for those cases ?

Hi,

Those are OI specific questions so they are better asked on openindiana 
specific lists but I can answer you here.

Yes I can requild the Images this weekend as I have some time for that 
on FOSDEM :)

For the second question, we have cloud-init nocloud support which I and 
others use to bootstrap networking and ssh for machines. It's a bit 
limited beyond that but does the job well enough. After that you can use 
Ansible to do the configuration.

Are there any examples (w/ qemu)

All I finally need is an image where I can directly ssh into (w/o PW)
from the host, so I can easily run builds inside there.

Here's my current code:

And here's a list of the steps I currently have to do manually
for preparing the image:
https://github.com/X11Libre/xorg-testing/blob/master/etc/vm/openindiana-hipster-amd64.cf

My ultimate goal is not having to maintain my own (manually tweaked)
images anymore, but directly start off on official images.

Try my script and add custom Ansible or shell scripts via SSH after the 
initial SSH process. I attached it. The part that you will need is the 
Here documents with yaml for the cloud-init config and the mkisofs line. 
The Rest is simply to get the MAC address from the VM as that's the 
property metadata-agent matches the NIC on. NICNAME can be freely chosen 
and the resulting link will be named NICNAME
