I have been using gnus for a number of years, and am seeing a problem
lately. When checking news with 'g', gnus doesn't report new news. I
can go and individually 'M-g' newsgroups and see news reported there.

I am on:
"21.4 (patch 13) \"Rational FORTRAN\" XEmacs Lucid"
"Gnus v5.10.7"

This problem has been variously reported in the past, but it doesn't
seem like there was a solution. See
http://groups.google.com/group/gnu.emacs.gnus/browse_frm/thread/6b1e0fb6e0759d14/eeb55ac80a286bc5?lnk=st&q=&rnum=5#eeb55ac80a286bc5
or
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=gnus%20does%20not%20get%20new%20news

Any thoughts on what could be wrong here? In this case I have started
completely from scratch, by deleting .newsrc* .gnus* News and Mail
directories, etc.

This is the same behavior I am observing, and the same problem I posted
about just a couple of days ago here.

FWIW I have moved up to the latest drop of gnus, and have tested it
with:
(gnus-version)
"No Gnus v0.6"

Randy, you are right it is the same problem you reported a couple days
earlier.

I have also tested with other newsservers, and I noticed that it works
fine with those. So it is the combination of gnus and this newsserver
that is causing a problem. I can't tell why. Any help is appreciated.

I reported this same problem a few months back. However, without any
changes to my configuration, I've just noticed things are now working
correctly and I don't need to do M-g anymore.

My problems started when my ISp changed news server software. I don't
know if they have changed something else or if they have just changed
some configuration, but now things do appear to be working fine.

I did notice the problem only with gnus - things worked fine with tin.
