didn't find how to get rid of those.  I have 4 articles sticking and was
hoping they disappear when the news server flushes them but they have been
around for longer than I would assume the news server keeps them.

Hi, Mikko,

This is a Gnus Agent thing: the download mark for articles which are to
be retrieved when being "plugged" again.

You can simply remove it by typing the "at" character on your keyboard:
@
