That might work, but how do I get gnus (Oort 0.14) to generate this?

Did you change the setting for Lynx in `mm-text-html-washer-alist' (or
`mm-text-html-renderer-alist')?
What you're seeing doesn't seem to be consistent with the default
setting:
(lynx mm-inline-wash-with-stdin nil
"lynx" "-dump" "-force_html" "-stdin")
