Yes.  It is based on an estimate (highest number minus lowest
number).  It is possible to fix the code, but nobody has really done
it yet.  The fix would enable back ends to tell Gnus about the real
number, and Gnus would use it.  Some back ends already know the real
number, so the most difficult part is communication between back end
and Gnus.

The spelling "back end" really sucks.
