Unable to login because can't read password from terminal.

When I read some of the email messages I receive, an error message is
displayed at the beginning of the buffer (looks like a part of the
message):

   Unable to login because can't read password from terminal.

Those cases where I've checked with "C-u g", these are messages that
are "multipart". (And the error message is nowhere in the message.)

Any ideas as to what could be wrong in my setup?

I'm using Gnus version 5.10.2.

You should try to edebug-defun all functions from w3m that might call
processes.  Yes, besides start-process and call-process, this also
includes call-process-region.  But I thought that Emacs starts w3m
just once and then sends it commands?  Well, it's also possible that
Emacs uses call-process-region to start w3m and send it some commands.
