I think that problem could be solved. Do you want to try again? You could M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET before the error happens, then make the error happen, then look at the resulting backtrace. (Or post it here.) I think you were frobbing load-path too late. Some parts of Gnus had been loaded already, then you frobbed load-path to point to the new version, then the rest of Gnus was loaded.
